SHUPL Hosted Moot Shanghai 2021

From 8 to 12 March, Moot Shanghai 2021 was successfully co-hosted by East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) and Shanghai University of Political Science and Law (SHUPL), and co-organized by Shanghai International Arbitration Center (SHIACand International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The event, which coincides with the 11th anniversary of Moot Shanghai hosted by SHUPL, attracted more than 400 outstanding law students from 22 countries and 60 teams to participate in the competition, had invited leading professionals such as practicing lawyers, mediators and arbitrators as judges, and had gained great support from ICC Hong Kong, Shanghai Bar Association, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, China Academy of Arbitration Law, Singapore International Arbitration Center, Korean Commercial Arbitration Board, China Legal Education and Career Seminar Series, and 15 law firms domestic and overseas.



At the beginning of the event, the opening ceremony was held simultaneously at several venues through Zoom, the online platform. Professor Liu Xiaohong, President and Deputy Chancellor of SHUPL; Professor Zhang Mingjun, Deputy President of East China University of Political Science and Law; Wang Weijun, Deputy Secretary-General of Shanghai International Arbitration Center; Shi Jun, Vice Minister of the Foreign Affairs Committee under Shanghai Bar Association; Sabine Neuhaus, Vice Chairman of Moot Alumni Association; Fan Mingchao, Reginal Director of Arbitration & ADR for North Asia at ICC; and partner representatives of law firms addressed the ceremony respectively at the venue. Faculty of organizers and students to participate in this competition attended the opening ceremony.



The competition gathered a number of teams from well-known universities at home and abroad. The participants showed their in-depth understanding and interpretation of international arbitration rules of international commercial law and arbitration law in the field of skilled use. In the competition, the participants discussed the most cutting-edge topics of international commercial mediation, combining with some hot issues in the context of the international environment, especially the international commercial legal issues brought about by COVID-19. Subsequently, from a professional point of view, the judges asked questions and commented on the teams, and actively shared their experience in the career with the participants.

As both one of the hosts and one of the participants, SHUPL attaches great importance to this Moot Shanghai 2021. The International Law School sent two teams to participate in the competition, with Associate Professor Adolf Peter and Doctor Shen Yiling as the coaches. In addition, the School of International Law also selected 22 volunteers cooperating to ensure the success of the event.

During the competition, the team from SHUPL competed with the teams of National Law University, Delhi, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, ILS Law College, Pune, Rio de Janeiro State University, Dalian Maritime University and other universities. The team members of SHUPL were imperturbable and adaptable, showing the SHUPLers’ quality of pursuit of improvement and excellence in international competitions.



Finally, the team from SHUPL won the Award of Outstanding Dependability in the competition.
